The Online Postgraduate Module in Drinking Water Distribution is a module of technical content for the acquisition of the skills necessary for the management of the various professional activities carried out in the field of drinking water distribution. The program includes the design, sizing and operation of distribution networks, as well as maintenance, asset management, efficiency improvement, water quality control and knowledge of new technologies and their application to optimize the distribution networks and their operation.
The postgraduate modules are developed in the online training environment of the Water School, accessible by username and password. All of them follow the online pedagogical modelThe program is supported at all times by an expert teacher and a dynamic tutor.
The credits passed are curricular in the case of wishing to take the postgraduate or master's degrees of the online itinerary.
Modular itinerary: your path to a master's degree
This postgraduate module is part of the Itinerary in Water Technology and Management, which allows a path of professional development: you start a module with the possibility of extending it to a postgraduate or master's degree.

Aspects to consider
If you later wish to extend this qualification to a postgraduate or master's degree in order to obtain the corresponding degree, it is necessary to have an official university degree or a university degree equivalent to a degree, diploma or bachelor's degree. Otherwise, a certificate of completion issued by the UPC Foundation will be obtained.
Methodologies and techniques for the design of a supply network according to the conditions to which it will be exposed and according to the existing operation forecast, with an evaluation of the effects that both extensions and modifications will entail. The design and service regulations governing drinking water distribution networks will be presented. Finally, the necessary knowledge on which materials to use in these networks will be provided.
Physical parameters describing the hydraulic behavior of supply networks. It also provides the necessary knowledge to understand the operation of the main components of these networks. Next, the minimum mathematical tools for network sizing are provided, and the most commonly used software for the design of new elements is also explained.
How to achieve the best provision, operation and maintenance of the supply service, and the relationship with the subscriber. It also presents the tools to identify and optimize the elements that determine the proper functioning of the network, and studies energy and hydraulic efficiency and energy savings in a drinking water distribution network.
Knowledge related to asset management in a distribution network, enabling students to discriminate the information involved in the decision making involved in this management. Concepts on the reliability of infrastructures, useful in the evaluation of their deterioration, are explained. Next, tools will be provided to enable students to design an optimal strategy for the maintenance, operation and renewal of assets. Finally, innovative solutions and technologies applicable to supply network asset management will be presented.
An overview of the efficiency of the supply network, followed by an in-depth study of the concepts involved, paying special attention to non-revenue water. It also describes the calculations of efficiency control ratios, which make it possible to diagnose the state of the network in terms of efficiency. The tools for designing the optimization plan for non-revenue water in the distribution system are also provided.
The characterization of the supply system is addressed in order to subsequently identify the hazards identified and, from here, to be able to assess the health risk they pose. Students will be provided with the necessary knowledge to draw up a health risk prevention plan and will also learn how to verify a prevention plan. Finally, they will also acquire the necessary skills to manage these plans using the ISO 22000 standard.
Open and innovative knowledge on existing technologies and their applicability in supply networks. Trends and R&D&I knowledge applicable to the management of network infrastructures are analyzed. In addition, it shows all those fields where improvements are possible with the increase of efficiencies and the improvement of processes through the implementation of technologies that may or may not be directly devised for drinking water distribution networks.

To facilitate success in the learning process from start to finish:
Industrial Organization Engineer and Industrial Technical Engineer in Mechanics from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).. Postgraduate degree in Water Distribution Networks and Master in Water Management from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).
Since 2005 he has worked as a professional in the water sector, initially in the Technical Office Department in Catalonia.
In 2008 he joined as head of distribution of the cities of Sant Cugat and Rubí, dedicated to the management, operation and maintenance of their distribution networks, as well as the management with their Administrations. Subsequently, since 2015 he has been in charge of operations, initially in Vallès Occidental-Baix Llobregat and currently in Penedès-Camp, where he manages around 25 water and sewerage operations, continues his career in the operational field of the water and environmental services sector and performs tasks of monitoring, control and definition of objectives for the continuous improvement of the networks, processes and equipment managed in the area.
